A repeated site search kept failing at the final hurdle. Here's how a single GIS-based report gave every discipline the same picture, and turned repeat failure into a viable site and design.
A designated search area had been searched before. Then searched again. Desktop analysis first, then a physical walk of the ground by technical planners, acquisition and design professionals working through the options by hand. Each time a candidate looked promising, something further down the line stopped it dead: a technical constraint nobody had flagged, an acquisition issue, a design clash. The candidate was aborted, and the search started over.
This is a familiar pattern in site development, and an expensive one. Every aborted candidate costs time, costs goodwill with the customer, and pushes the delivery date further out.
The brief was straightforward to state and hard to deliver: analyse the search area properly, de-risk the process using geomatics rather than repeat legwork, get the technical, acquisition and design disciplines working from the same picture, identify candidates that would actually survive scrutiny, and take the strongest of those through to design feasibility.

We pulled together the data sets that mattered: terrain height, clutter height, planning designations, land boundaries and ownership, existing infrastructure, white list and black list portfolios, and panoramic survey imagery. All of it went into a GIS platform and came out the other side as DAS Smart Search, a single visual representation of the search area, rather than a stack of separate reports that nobody has time to reconcile.
DAS Smart Search became the shared reference point. Technical, acquisition and design teams worked from the same data, at the same time, instead of passing a candidate down the line and finding out three weeks later that it did not work. Suitable candidates emerged with a level of certainty that the previous rounds of searching had not managed.
The strongest candidates were then captured using digital twins, and taken through design feasibility. A remote multi-skilled visit concluded the process with a viable candidate and a workable site design, without a second physical visit.

DAS Smart Search gave every discipline a shared, better understanding of the search area, and that understanding is what actually reduces risk. Geomatics does not replace professional judgement, it gives it something solid to work from.
Working across disciplines in parallel rather than in sequence meant problems surfaced early, when they are cheap to solve, rather than late, when they are not. That avoided the iteration, delay and cost that had dogged the search until then.
There was also a quieter benefit. Because the data did the early legwork, the number of physical site surveys needed across disciplines dropped, which mattered to a customer with real ESG commitments to meet, not just report on.
